Nykarleby is a small Swedish-speaking town in Ostrobothnia, best known as the birthplace of writer Zacharias Topelius. Its compact centre has a wooden church, a riverside park and a museum in Topelius's childhood home. Most visitors pass through in a few hours on the way between Vaasa and Jakobstad.
