Jakobstad (Pietarsaari in Finnish) is a small Swedish-speaking port town on the Ostrobothnian coast, between Vaasa and Kokkola. The wooden old town Skata, the 18th-century ship replica at Gamla hamn and the tobacco-factory landmark fit into a single unhurried day. It is a stop on the west-coast route, not a destination that needs a week.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: town hall square to Skata is about 10 minutes on foot, Gamla hamn about 15. For anything further use the Vippari dial-a-ride (€4 adults, €2 under 12, free under 4; weekdays 07:30–15:45, book via the Matkahuolto app or by phone) or a taxi. A car helps for Fäboda beach and the Larsmo bridge route.

Safety

Jakobstad is a quiet, low-crime small town; the real issues are icy pavements in winter, short daylight, and seasonal closures that can leave you with nothing open.
  • Most sights are seasonal: Gamla hamn and the ships run mainly in summer, so check dates before you build a day around them.
  • Buses between Vaasa and Kokkola stop in town, but the Onnibus highway stop Edsevö is 11 km out and connections to the centre are not timed.
  • The Bennäs railway station is 10 km south; train tickets to Jakobstad include the connection bus, so confirm it is running for your departure.
  • Winter days are short and icy underfoot; summer is the only season when the waterfront is fully open.
