TruroTruro, Massachusetts

Give Truro 2 nights if you want the ocean cliffs and lighthouse; 1 night is enough if you are just breaking the drive to Provincetown.

Truro is a small Outer Cape town of about 2,000 people, mostly Cape Cod National Seashore, with the ocean on one side and the bay on the other. There is no real town centre to wander: you come for the beaches, Highland Light, the back roads and a base between Wellfleet and Provincetown. A car is close to essential, and summer cottages book out early.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Route 6 is the spine of the Outer Cape and Route 6A runs along the bay side. A car is the practical way to reach the beaches, the lighthouse and Provincetown; there is no useful local bus network for sightseeing. Bicycles work on the back roads but the main roads have narrow shoulders. The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority runs seasonal Outer Cape service — check current routes and times before relying on it.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

North Truro (Route 6A / Beach Point)

The main lodging strip: motels, cottages and bay beaches along Shore Road. Best for a first visit and sunsets over the bay.

Truro Center and Pond Village

Inland, quieter, near the bay-side beaches and the general store. Best for families who want space and a shorter drive to the ocean.

Highland / South Truro

Near Highland Light and the ocean beaches. Best for cliff walks and lighthouse mornings; fewer services.

Campgrounds along Highland Road

Horton's, North Truro and North of Highland camping areas sit inside or beside the National Seashore. Best for tents and RVs in summer.

Watch out

Safety

Truro is a low-crime, low-density town; the real risks are ocean currents at unguarded beaches, ticks and poison ivy on trails, and deer on Route 6 after dark.
  • Summer traffic on Route 6 backs up on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings; plan around it.
  • Ocean-side beaches have cold water, strong shorebreak and steep drop-offs; swim near lifeguards when posted.
  • Poison ivy and ticks are common on the back-road trails; check yourself after walks.
  • Many restaurants and lodgings close from November to April — confirm before booking a shoulder-season trip.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in parts of the National Seashore.
