Oak ParkOak Park, Illinois

One full day from Chicago covers the Wright Home and Studio, Unity Temple and Hemingway's birthplace; sleep here only if you want two slow days.

Oak Park is a compact suburb 16 km west of the Loop and the densest cluster of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie School buildings anywhere, including his own home and studio. It works as a walking day trip on the CTA Green Line, or as a quieter two-night base with Chicago 25 minutes away by train.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Walk: the sights sit within about 2 km of each other. CTA Green Line runs to the Loop daily; Metra UP-West is faster but thin outside rush hour. Two local taxi firms cover the town; Chicago drivers often do not know the streets.

Naperville

caution

Door to door: 45–75 min

Better by car; the riverwalk is the draw.

Morton Arboretum is the reason to come.

Downers Grove

caution

Door to door: 40–70 min

Downtown strip and the Belmont Prairie; car is simpler.

Franklin Park

Little for a visitor beyond the park and the Metra stop.

Small lake and a walkable centre; half a day.

Lemont

caution

Historic downtown and the I&M Canal; best in warm months.

Lombard

caution

Watch out

Safety

Oak Park is a well-policed, walkable suburb. The real cautions are icy pavements in winter, the Austin Boulevard edge after dark, and unlit residential streets away from the Green Line.
  • Oak Park does not use Chicago's street numbering: east–west numbers start at 0 at Austin Boulevard and reach 1200 at Harlem.
  • Madison Street is 500 south here, not the north–south zero line it is in Chicago.
  • The Wright Home and Studio tour has strictly limited capacity: book ahead for most of the year.
  • Austin Boulevard on the east side borders a rougher Chicago neighbourhood: normal city awareness after dark.
