Ayvalık is a former Greek town on the Gulf of Edremit, rebuilt by Cretan Turks after 1923. Its draw is the mix: stone mansions and churches on the mainland, the Cunda island strip across two bridges, olive oil everywhere, and a 7 km beach 8 km south. Two nights covers it; three if you add Bergama or a boat day.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Dolmuş and local buses run from the centre to Cunda island and Çamlık, and south to Sarımsaklı. The summer ferry between town and Cunda no longer sails, so you cross by road bridge. The main bus station (otogar) is 3 km east on the bypass; a dolmuş or local bus brings you downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Ayvalık is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are summer heat, sea urchins and currents at the beaches, and unposted bills in meyhane alleys: ask the total before you sit.
  • The main bus station is 3 km east of the centre: budget a dolmuş or local bus on arrival.
  • The summer ferry between town and Cunda no longer runs; cross by road bridge.
  • Şeytan Sofrası car park has a posted entry charge and reports of pressure for more: pay the posted amount only.
  • Some ruins are fenced or unsafe: Ay Dimitri on Cunda collapsed after 2020 and Moonlight Monastery has been fenced off.
  • Many small hotels and restaurants close outside May–October; check before booking winter.
