Edremit is the inland market town of a gulf of olive groves and small resorts: Akçay, Güre, Altınoluk, Burhaniye and Ören. The town itself has the bus station and a small museum; the sea, the beaches and Mount Ida (Kaz Dağı) are 5–20 km away. Most travellers use it as a two-night beach stop between Çanakkale and İzmir, or as a base for Assos and Ayvalık.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses radiate from Edremit otogar to Akçay, Güre, Altınoluk, Burhaniye and Ören; pay the driver in cash. Inter-city buses stop at Edremit, Burhaniye and Altınoluk but will not sell short hops between gulf towns. A car helps for Kaz Dağı, Hasanboğuldu and Antandrus; hire desks are at the airport.

Safety

Low-crime, family-oriented coast; the real risks are summer heat, unmarked sea entry, and beach bars with no posted prices — ask the total before you order.
  • Inter-city buses will not sell you the short hop between gulf towns: take a dolmuş.
  • Resort hotels in Güre and along the coast get mixed reviews; check recent ones before booking.
  • In July and August beaches and roads fill up and room rates jump; book ahead.
  • Many coastal hotels and restaurants close from November to April.
  • Sea urchins and rocky entry at some beaches: wear shoes in the water.
