Elko is a high-desert ranching and gold-mining town on I-80 in Northern Nevada, halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City. It is a practical overnight stop with a walkable old core, a Basque dining tradition, and the Ruby Mountains 20 minutes south. Most travellers pass through; the ones who stop come for Lamoille Canyon and the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in late January.

Getting around

Elko is a driving town: I-80 runs through it and almost every sight outside the old core needs a car. Downtown is compact enough to walk between the museums, restaurants and the library. There is no useful local bus network for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so book ahead for early train or flight departures.

Watch out

Safety

Elko is a small, low-crime town and feels safe at night in the centre. The real risks are the drive — winter ice on I-80, deer and elk at dusk, and long empty stretches with no phone signal — plus summer heat in the canyon.
  • Distances are long: Reno is about 4 h west, Salt Lake City about 3.5 h east.
  • Lamoille Canyon Road (NF-660) is seasonal — snow can close it from late autumn into spring; check conditions before driving up.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; carry water on any canyon or refuge walk.
  • Amtrak uses two separate platforms: westbound at 1300 Water Street, eastbound at 1301 Sharps Access Road. Confirm which one before you call a taxi.
  • Casino floors are everywhere; if you win big as a non-US citizen, tax withholding applies — keep the paperwork.
