Elko is a high-desert ranching and gold-mining town on I-80 in Northern Nevada, halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City. It is a practical overnight stop with a walkable old core, a Basque dining tradition, and the Ruby Mountains 20 minutes south. Get around
Elko is a driving town: I-80 runs through it and almost every sight outside the old core needs a car. Downtown is compact enough to walk between the museums, restaurants and the library. There is no useful local bus network for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so book ahead for early train or flight departures.
