  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hinsdale is a town of about 1,900 people in the Berkshire Hills, on MA Route 8 between Dalton and the Connecticut line. There is no hotel: the only beds are two campgrounds, so most travellers pass through on the way to Pittsfield or Lenox. Come for lake swimming, flat riverside trails and cheap camp nights, not for a town break.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–6 km apart on back roads with no pavement in places. MA Route 8 runs northwest to Dalton and south to Washington; MA Route 143 comes in from the east off Route 9. The village core around Main St and Maple St is walkable in about 15 minutes, and cycling works on the main roads but not on the dirt sections.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Pittsfield

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Closest shops and petrol; useful for a rainy half-day.

Door to door: About 35 min

Small hill town with a lake and quiet roads; pair it with a Pittsfield run.

Lanesborough

go

MA Route 8 north to Dalton, then US-7 north, about 35 min by car

Mount Greylock access and the northern Berkshires; a full afternoon.

Hancock

caution

Door to door: About 50 min

MA Route 8 north, then US-20 west, about 40 min by car

Thin on services; go for the scenery, not for a town visit.

Door to door: About 1 h

MA Route 8 north to Pittsfield, then US-7 south, about 45 min by car

Best indoor day in the area: historic house museums, shops and restaurants.

Williamstown

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 20 min

MA Route 8 north to Pittsfield, then US-7 north, about 1 h 10 min by car

Art museums and the northern Berkshires; too far for a relaxed return day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Fernwood Forest Campground, Longview Ave

Tent sites, pop-ups and RVs; the closest thing to a bed in town. 2025 season ran May 1–Oct 15; check 2026 dates and rates.

Summit Hill Campground, Old Middlefield Rd

South of the centre near the Hinsdale Flats; tents and full-hookup RVs, pool and camp store. 2025 season ran May 1–Sep 28; check 2026.

Dalton or Pittsfield (off-town)

Motels and chain hotels 15–25 min by car. This is where you sleep if you want a room, a shower and a late check-in.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet rural town with very little street crime; the real risks are driving the dark, deer-heavy back roads at dusk, hunting season in the wildlife area and unmonitored winter ice.
  • No hotel, no motel and no late-night food: the last kitchen closes around 20:00 and the campgrounds lock their gates at night.
  • Cell signal drops in the Hinsdale Flats and along the river trail; download an offline map before you drive in.
  • Hunting is allowed in the Hinsdale Flats WMA in season: wear bright colours in autumn and stay on marked paths.
  • Some WMA access roads and car parks are only open for the spring turkey and autumn hunting seasons.
  • Winter ice on Lake Ashmere is not monitored: do not walk out on it.
