Locarno
Give Locarno two nights: one full day for Piazza Grande, the old town and the Madonna del Sasso funicular, one for Cardada or a lake boat.
Locarno sits at the northern tip of Lake Maggiore, 30 min by train from Bellinzona and about 1 h from Lugano. The town itself is small and walkable; the reason to stay is the lakefront, the funicular up to Madonna del Sasso and the cable car to Cardada, plus the August film festival on Piazza Grande. Two nights covers it; add a night if you want Verzasca Valley or a boat to the Brissago Islands.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to Piazza Grande is about 5 min on foot, the old town is behind the square. The Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular runs from near the station up to the sanctuary and the Cardada cable car base. Local buses (Arcobaleno network) link Muralto, Ascona and Tenero; boats leave from the Locarno jetty for the Brissago Islands and Italian shore. A car is a liability in the centre — park at Piazza Castello and walk.

Safety
- August film festival: Piazza Grande is fenced and ticketed, hotel prices spike, book months ahead.
- Cardada cable car and the Cimetta chairlift close for maintenance between seasons; check before planning the day.
- Lake boats run a reduced timetable outside summer; the last return from the Brissago Islands is early.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms on the lake are sudden; the cable car stops running in high wind.
- Many shops and some restaurants close on Sunday and Monday outside the season.
