Hamina is a small southeast-coast town built on a circular plan, with the town hall at the centre and streets either ringing it or running into it. The old town, the fortress earthworks and the flag park fit into a few hours. Most travellers see it as a stop on the E18 between Helsinki and the Russian border, or as a quieter base next to Kotka.

Getting around

The old town is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Local buses run within Hamina and to Kotka; bike sharing (Donkey Republic) covers short trips in season. A car helps for the camping area, the fish shop at Puuropytyntie and the national park islands.

A quiet, low-crime town. The real issues are winter ice on pavements, short daylight in Nov–Jan, and border paperwork if you plan to cross east — check current rules.
