Hamina
Give Hamina one night, or a half-day stop between Kotka and the Vaalimaa border: the circular old town is small and walkable.
Hamina is a small southeast-coast town built on a circular plan, with the town hall at the centre and streets either ringing it or running into it. The old town, the fortress earthworks and the flag park fit into a few hours. Most travellers see it as a stop on the E18 between Helsinki and the Russian border, or as a quieter base next to Kotka.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake, eye contact, short and direct; avoid: Hugs and long small talk with strangers
- Silence: Let pauses be pauses; avoid: Filling every quiet moment
- Sauna: Shower first, ask before throwing water on the stones; avoid: Swimsuits in nude-only saunas, or nudity in mixed ones marked otherwise
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or pastries; avoid: Keeping shoes on indoors
- Personal space: Keep a metre's distance in queues; avoid: Sitting next to a stranger when other seats are free
- Promises: Mean what you say; Finns will; avoid: Polite 'let's meet sometime' you do not intend
Scams and watch-outs
- Many sights are outdoor and free; indoor opening hours are limited outside summer — check before you go.
- The eastern border crossing at Vaalimaa is about 30 km away; entry rules for Russia change often, so check current requirements before planning a crossing.
- Summer weekends fill the few old-town rooms; book ahead.
- Winter days are short and some seasonal cafés and the market square go quiet.
A quiet, low-crime town. The real issues are winter ice on pavements, short daylight in Nov–Jan, and border paperwork if you plan to cross east — check current rules.
