AliceAlice, Texas
Stop for half a day, not a night: the Tejano and South Texas museums are 2 blocks apart, and the water tower is a 5-minute detour off TX-44.
Alice is a 19,000-person oil town on the South Texas Plains, roughly halfway between San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley on US-281. It calls itself the Hub City and the birthplace of Tejano music: the first Tejano records were cut here in the 1940s, and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Museum keeps that story. Two small museums, a lake park and a record-setting water tower are the whole sightseeing list. Most travellers pass through on the way to Corpus Christi, Laredo or McAllen; a half-day stop is enough, and a night only makes sense if you are breaking up a long drive.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 1–3 km apart and there is no useful local transit for visitors. Downtown is walkable once you park — the South Texas Museum and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Museum are about 2 blocks apart on Wright Street. Greyhound serves Alice, but the stop is a highway depot, not a base for sightseeing.

Second cluster of chain hotels near the highway junction; closest to the water tower and downtown.
Downtown / Wright Street
Museums and the old commercial core; very few beds, so treat it as a daytime stop.
