Zitácuaro is a mid-size Michoacán city in a bowl-shaped valley, 2.5 hours west of Mexico City by bus. Its pull is location: the eastern monarch butterfly reserves sit up in the hills above town, and the Matlazinca ruins of San Felipe los Alzati are a short drive out. The city itself is a working Mexican town with a basilica, a hilltop independence monument and a Thursday market — a night or two, not a destination week.

Getting around

Taxis are the dependable way around the core and are cheap; sitios cluster near the plaza. Ride-hailing apps list the city but drivers are few — do not count on one at 6am. For the butterfly reserves and San Felipe los Alzati you need a car, a taxi arranged for the day, or a tour.

Watch out

Safety

Zitácuaro itself is a normal working city; the real variables are the mountain roads to the reserves and Michoacán's wider security picture. Travel by day, use arranged transport, and check current advisories before booking.
  • Butterfly reserves are only worth it in season (roughly Nov–Mar); outside it there are no colonies to see.
  • Reserve roads are rough and unlit; do not drive up after dark.
  • Mountain mornings near the reserves are cold — bring a jacket even in the dry season.
  • Check the current security situation in Michoacán before you travel and stick to daylight road moves.
