Come to Sapporo for early February's Snow Festival or for a cool-summer escape from Honshu's heat, and use it as the base for the rest of Hokkaido rather than a one-night stop — most island sights need a further train, bus or rental car from here.
Sapporo is Hokkaido's largest city and transport hub, laid out on a rare Japanese street grid. It runs the Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) in early February, a strong food scene built on miso ramen, crab and Genghis Khan grilled mutton, and the Sapporo Beer Museum in the old brewery. Most other Hokkaido destinations — Otaru, Furano, Niseko, Hakodate — need a further train, bus or rental car from here.
