Skokie
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be here: 1 night covers the Holocaust museum and Old Orchard, and downtown Chicago is 45–60 min by CTA.
Skokie is a Chicago suburb about 24 km north of the Loop, on the CTA Yellow Line. Its one destination-grade sight is the Illinois Holocaust Museum, which has been closed for renovation with a reopening set for 2026. Everything else — Old Orchard mall, the library, the parks, the kosher delis — is suburban daily life, so most travellers come for a half-day or a single night rather than a multi-day stay.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
The CTA Yellow Line (Skokie Swift) runs only between Dempster–Skokie and Howard, where you change to the Red or Purple line for downtown Chicago. CTA and Pace buses cover the rest of the village and meet at Old Orchard, the Skokie CTA station, downtown Skokie and Village Crossing. A car makes the suburbs much easier; I-94 (Edens Expressway) has exits at Touhy Avenue and Dempster Street, and US-41 runs through as Skokie Boulevard.
