UxbridgeUxbridge, Ontario

One night is enough: use Uxbridge as a half-day stop for the Lucy Maud Montgomery home and the trail network, then sleep in Port Perry or Pickering.

Uxbridge is a small township town in northern Durham Region, about 90 minutes from Toronto by GO bus. It has no hotel cluster and no rail link of its own, so most visitors come for a half day: the Leaskdale home of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the 220 km trail network and a compact downtown of independent shops. Two nights only makes sense if you are walking or cycling the trails.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable, but the town sprawls: the big-box strip on Toronto Street South and the trailheads need a car or a bus. Durham Region Transit route 905C runs from Whitby GO Station to Railway and Albert Streets in about 90 minutes; route 605 serves the Toronto Street South stores. GO bus routes 70 and 71 also end at Railway and Albert Streets. Taxi service is limited — check locally before relying on it.

Rush-hour connections switch to Old Elm — check the GO timetable the day before.

Uxbridge downtown (Brock St W)

A handful of rooms and B&Bs near the Four Corners; walkable to shops and restaurants, but supply is thin — book early or look at Port Perry.

Port Perry

About 25 min east by car; the practical base for Uxbridge with more beds and lakefront restaurants.

Pickering

About 30 min south by car on Highway 407/401; chain hotels and GO train access to Toronto.

Watch out

Safety

Very low street crime; the real risks are rural-road driving in winter, ticks on trail sections in spring and summer, and thin late-night transport — the last GO bus leaves early, so check the timetable before an evening out.
  • No train station in service: the York–Durham Heritage Railway stopped operating in 2024, so plan around GO buses.
  • Trail sections close or turn icy in winter; check the township trail page before setting out.
  • The Montgomery home and the Historical Centre keep limited hours — confirm before you drive out.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on some rural trail sections.
