Ho Chi Minh City is big, flat, hot all year and runs on motorbikes. The sights a first visit needs sit in five compact pockets of the old District 1, District 3 and Chợ Lớn, but the gaps between them are rides, not walks, in 33 °C heat. The trips that go wrong walk between pockets at noon, underestimate the rush-hour ride to the airport, and book an alley guesthouse that locks before the night flight lands.

Only the history you meet on the ground

01Saigon grew from a Khmer fishing village (Prey Nokor) into the Vietnamese south's river port in the 1700s; Chinese traders built Chợ Lớn beside it, and the two merged into one city.
02The French made it the capital of Cochinchina from 1862: the cathedral, post office, opera house and boulevards of the old District 1 are that city. From 1955 to 1975 it was the capital of South Vietnam.
03On 30 April 1975 northern tanks broke through the palace gate; the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1976. Everyone still says Sài Gòn, and since 2025 'Sài Gòn' is also the name of the central ward.
04Since 1 July 2025 the city has absorbed Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu provinces, stretching it to the sea at Vũng Tàu and making it the country's largest economic unit; districts were abolished in favour of wards (check the new ward on official addresses).

More background

The city is a delta city: the Saigon River curls round the east, canals (kênh) cut through the south and west, and high tides plus a tropical downpour flood low streets in the rainy months. That is why afternoon plans in September and October should be indoors and close to the hotel.

Southern manners are looser than Hanoi's. Prices are sweeter, service is quicker, English goes further, and the city is proud of eating out every day. It also keeps the memory of the Republic of Vietnam quietly: many families left in 1975, and older Saigonese still use pre-1975 street names.

Where to sleep, see, eat — and what to skip

A first visit lives in a 2 km box around the old District 1: the colonial core at the river end, Bến Thành and Phạm Ngũ Lão to the south-west, the palace and War Remnants Museum to the west, Đa Kao and Tân Định to the north. Chợ Lớn is a 25-minute ride west; Thảo Điền a 20-minute ride east over the river.

Heat: All year: shade and AC every 60–90 minutes, electrolytes, no midday walks.
Dengue: Peaks in the rainy season (Jun–Nov); repellent day and dusk; see a doctor for sudden high fever.
Food and water: Bottled or filtered water; busy stalls.

What locals notice

Temples and pagodas: Shoulders and knees covered; hats off in halls; do not step in front of worshippers.
War sites: Keep voices low at the War Remnants Museum and memorials; no joke photos with weapons.
Shoes: Off in homes and some pagoda halls; follow the pile at the door.
Tipping: Not expected at stalls; round up drivers; tip spa staff directly.
Paying and haggling: Haggle calmly in markets, never at food stalls with posted prices.
Photos: Ask before photographing people; no drones without a permit.
Tempers: Raised voices lose face and the argument; smile and walk away.

Visa extensions

Office: Immigration Department office for the south, 333–335–337 Nguyễn Trãi (check the address and hours before going).
Extending: Tourists on an e-visa usually cannot extend alone; agencies do it for a fee with a sponsor.
Often simpler: Leave to Cambodia or another country and re-enter on a new e-visa.
Overstay: Fined at exit and can cost the flight; fix it before the airport.

Saigon in five chapters: a Khmer port turned colonial capital, a wartime capital, a renamed city that never took the new name to heart, and the country's economic engine.

1From Prey Nokor to Gia Định1 min

Before the 17th century this was Prey Nokor, a Khmer port on the Saigon River. Vietnamese settlers arrived with the Nguyễn lords' expansion, and in 1698 the lords organised the area as Gia Định. Chinese refugees founded Chợ Lớn a few kilometres west in 1778, and the two towns grew together along the canals.

2Capital of Cochinchina1 min

French forces took Saigon in 1859 and made it the capital of the colony of Cochinchina. They filled canals to make boulevards, and built the cathedral (1880), the post office (1891), the governor's palace and the opera house (1900). Much of the old District 1 plan dates from these decades.

3Capital of the South1 min

From 1955 to 1975 Saigon was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam, swollen by refugees and US spending. The 1966 Independence Palace replaced the bombed French palace. The Tết Offensive of 1968 reached the US embassy; on 30 April 1975 northern tanks broke through the palace gate.

4A renamed city1 min

In 1976 the city was renamed after Hồ Chí Minh. Many families left in the following years; many returned after 1986 as reforms reopened private business. 'Sài Gòn' remains the everyday name, and since 2025 it is also the official name of the central ward.

5The engine1 min

Today the city produces a large share of the country's economy. A metro line opened in December 2024, towers line the river, and in 2025 the city absorbed Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu, becoming a region stretching from industrial parks to the sea.
