Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes, but it is not flat: expect steep lanes and slippery cobbles when wet. Buses to the suburbs and nearby towns leave from the bus station on Queen Victoria Street. Trains run from Macclesfield station, just east of the shopping area, to Manchester in about 20 min and London Euston in about 1 h 45 min. A car helps for the Peak District and the Cat and Fiddle road.

Safety

A low-risk town by UK standards; the real issues are wet cobbles, steep lanes and late-night drinkers around Chestergate. Standard city care applies after dark.
  • The Cat and Fiddle road (A537) to Buxton can be impassable in winter: check before driving.
  • Cobbled streets and the 108 Steps are slippery when wet; wear shoes with grip.
  • Paradise Mill is by guided tour only and has access limits for visitors with mobility restrictions: book ahead.
  • Some pubs and bars stop serving food early in the evening: check last orders before you set out.
