Hagi is a small castle town on the Sea of Japan where the Mōri clan ruled the Chōshū domain for over 250 years, and where the leaders of the Meiji Restoration were born. The old samurai and merchant districts survive almost intact, five sites are on the UNESCO Meiji Industrial Revolution list, and the whole town is walkable or covered by a ¥100 loop bus. It is quiet, cheap and far from the main rail line, so it works as one deliberate stop between Hiroshima and Yamaguchi rather than a base.

Getting around

The centre sits on a delta between the Hashimoto and Matsumoto rivers and most sights are within a 20–30 min walk of each other. The Hagi Junkan Maaru loop bus runs about 07:00–19:00 with departures every 30 min or so; any single ride is ¥100, a one-day pass ¥500 and a two-day pass ¥700. The blue route covers the castle, Horiuchi, Jokamachi and Teramachi; the red route covers Higashi-Hagi Station and the outer sites. Bicycles can be rented near Higashi-Hagi Station and by the castle.

Watch out

Safety

Hagi is a small, low-crime town and walking the historic districts is safe day and night. The real risks are summer heat, uneven stone steps at the castle ruins, and the last bus or train leaving earlier than you expect.
  • Trains on the San'in and Mine lines run roughly once every two hours: plan connections or take the bus.
  • Rural trains and mountain-road buses are uncomfortable; if you get motion sickness, sit at the front.
  • Many small houses and museums close at 17:00 and some shut on Mondays: check before you walk out.
  • Cash is still needed at small houses, kilns and rural buses.
