  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Corydon is a town of about 3,100 people in Harrison County, Southern Indiana, and Indiana's first state capital (1816–1825). Its compact downtown is a National Register historic district: a limestone capitol building, the Constitution Elm site, the Governor's headquarters and a small Civil War battlefield. Most of it is walkable in two to three hours; the surrounding cave country and the Ohio River drive are what turn a stop into a full day. It works best as a day trip from Louisville (about 30–40 minutes by car) or as a half-day break on an I-64 drive between Louisville and St. Louis.

Getting around

You need a car. Corydon sits off I-64 at IN 135 (Exit 105); the historic district is small enough to walk once parked, and there is street parking around Capitol Ave. Caves, parks, the casino and the Ohio River overlooks are 15–40 min away by road, with no useful public transport. Distances by car: Louisville 26 mi, Bloomington 85 mi, Evansville 98 mi, Lexington 102 mi, Cincinnati 131 mi, Indianapolis 132 mi, Nashville 190 mi, St. Louis 240 mi.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Corydon (around Capitol Ave and Elm St)

The only place where you can walk to the historic sites; one B&B inn and small rentals, very few rooms.

Landmark Ave / Federal Dr (I-64 Exit 105)

Chain hotels and diners at the interchange, 5–10 min drive from the square; the practical choice for a car trip.

Elizabeth / casino area (IN 11)

Casino resort with its own hotel and golf, about 20 min east; a base for the casino, not for the town.

Louisville or New Albany, Kentucky/Indiana

Big-city beds 30–40 min away; better value and more choice if Corydon is a day trip.

Watch out

Safety

Corydon is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and evening; the real risks are driving the two-lane roads to the caves after dark, summer heat on exposed trails, and deer on the highway at dusk.
  • Corydon Capitol State Historic Site is closed Mondays and some holidays; winter hours vary — check before driving.
  • Cave tours (Marengo, Squire Boone, Wyandotte) run on set departure times and can sell out or close seasonally — book or call ahead.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on back roads toward the river and caves.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
  • Prices are shown before sales tax; Indiana adds 7% sales tax at the till.
