Rochester is a small Minnesota city 130 km southeast of Minneapolis–St. Paul that runs far above its size because the Mayo Clinic draws patients and families from everywhere. Downtown is compact and connected by heated skyways and subways, so winter visits work without a car. Most travellers need one or two nights; the sights are the clinic campus, two historic mansions and the trail network.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice for anything outside downtown: parking is easy and mostly free except downtown and around the clinic. Downtown, use the enclosed skyways and subways — heated in winter and linked to the clinic, hotels and restaurants. The city bus runs weekdays only, roughly hourly, with the last routes around 21:00 and no Sunday or holiday service, so it is not a tourist tool. Taxis and rideshares cover the gaps.

Watch out

Safety

Rochester is a low-crime city and downtown is comfortable by day and evening. The real risks are winter cold and ice on pavements, plus deer on rural roads after dark.
  • Winter is genuinely cold: wind chills below −20 °C are normal in Jan–Feb. Layer up and use the skyways.
  • The public bus does not run on Sundays or holidays and stops early on weekdays.
  • Downtown parking meters are enforced, including for cars with handicap placards; city lots are free nights and weekends with the first weekday hour free, private lots are not.
  • Rochester, MN and Rochester, NY are different cities with different airports — check your ticket code before booking.
  • Mayo Clinic guided tours are for patients and families only; other visitors use the self-guided brochure from a Help Desk.
