The short answer
>- January is the single easiest month to choose a warm-weather trip. The northeast monsoon keeps most of Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and southern India dry and in the high 20s to low 30s °C. The Gulf, the Red Sea, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America are also in their dry season. South of the equator it is mid-summer: Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa are warm, with long evenings. >- The trade-off is the northern winter. Europe, North America, Korea and northern China are cold and dark, with the shortest days of the year, but city hotels, museums and flights are cheaper outside the ski resorts and the first week of the month. Japan is the exception that suits both: ski resorts in Hokkaido and the Alps get reliable snow, while Tokyo and Kyoto are dry, clear and cold. >- If you have no fixed dates, the cheapest move is to travel after about 6 January. Christmas and New Year pricing collapses in the first full week of the month almost everywhere except ski resorts.

Exceptions and things that catch people out
>- Not everywhere in the tropics is dry in January. The east coast of Malaysia, southern Thailand's Gulf islands in some years, Bali and parts of Indonesia, and the Philippines can still see heavy rain. Check the specific island, not the country. >- Southern Hemisphere summer means heatwaves inland in Australia and Chile, and bushfire or fire-ban risk in parts of Australia. Follow local fire warnings. >- Lunar New Year can fall in late January. In the days around it, transport and hotels fill across China, Vietnam, Korea and Chinese communities worldwide, and many small businesses close. >- Ski resorts in Europe can have thin snow at low altitude in early January; high resorts are safer. >- In the northern winter, snow and ice cause flight delays. Build a buffer day before any fixed connection or cruise.
