Give Guelph one full day, two nights at most: limestone downtown, the covered bridge and the arboretum. Base here for Elora and Fergus, not for Toronto.
Guelph is a compact university city on the Speed River, about 1.25–1.75 hours from Toronto by train. Its draw is a walkable limestone downtown, a 19th-century radial street plan, a river valley with trails, and a market that has run for over 180 years. Most travellers see it in a day and use it as a base for Wellington County's villages.

Downtown is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Guelph Transit buses fan out from St. George's Square; cash fare is C$3 and a day pass C$8 (2018 figures, so confirm current fares). Parking downtown is metered on weekdays and cheap or free evenings and Sundays. Taxis and ride-hailing work but are rarely needed inside the core.
