Guelph
Give Guelph one full day, two nights at most: limestone downtown, the covered bridge and the arboretum. Base here for Elora and Fergus, not for Toronto.
Guelph is a compact university city on the Speed River, about 1.25–1.75 hours from Toronto by train. Its draw is a walkable limestone downtown, a 19th-century radial street plan, a river valley with trails, and a market that has run for over 180 years. Most travellers see it in a day and use it as a base for Wellington County's villages.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter ice on downtown pavements and river trails; wear grip soles.
- GO Transit trains from Toronto are unreserved and crowded at peak; stand or take the bus.
- The train station is called Guelph Central GO on GO timetables and Guelph on VIA timetables — same building.
- Some downtown restaurants close early on Sundays and Mondays.
Guelph is a low-crime city and the downtown is comfortable on foot after dark. The real risks are winter ice, deer ticks on valley trails in summer, and driving the Hanlon Expressway in snow.
