  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Guelph is a compact university city on the Speed River, about 1.25–1.75 hours from Toronto by train. Its draw is a walkable limestone downtown, a 19th-century radial street plan, a river valley with trails, and a market that has run for over 180 years. Most travellers see it in a day and use it as a base for Wellington County's villages.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Downtown is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Guelph Transit buses fan out from St. George's Square; cash fare is C$3 and a day pass C$8 (2018 figures, so confirm current fares). Parking downtown is metered on weekdays and cheap or free evenings and Sundays. Taxis and ride-hailing work but are rarely needed inside the core.

Car about 15 min south

Rural township; only worth it with a specific stop in mind.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / St. George's Square

Walk to the market, the basilica, the river and the train station; the only area you need for a short stay.

Near the University of Guelph

Gordon Street corridor; cheaper summer rooms when students leave, 10–15 min by bus from downtown.

Highway 6 / Hanlon Expressway edge

Chain motels with free parking; you will drive everywhere, including to dinner.

Watch out

Safety

Guelph is a low-crime city and the downtown is comfortable on foot after dark. The real risks are winter ice, deer ticks on valley trails in summer, and driving the Hanlon Expressway in snow.
  • Winter ice on downtown pavements and river trails; wear grip soles.
  • GO Transit trains from Toronto are unreserved and crowded at peak; stand or take the bus.
  • The train station is called Guelph Central GO on GO timetables and Guelph on VIA timetables — same building.
  • Some downtown restaurants close early on Sundays and Mondays.
