Fort SmithFort Smith, Arkansas
Give Fort Smith one full day and one night: the national historic site and downtown take half a day, and the city is a car stop, not a base.
Fort Smith sits on the Arkansas-Oklahoma line where the Arkansas and Poteau rivers meet, at the edge of the River Valley between the Ouachita and Ozark mountains. It grew as a frontier army post and court town, and its one essential stop is the Fort Smith National Historic Site, with the reconstructed gallows and the courtroom of Judge Isaac Parker. The rest of the city is spread out along Rogers Avenue and needs a car. Most travellers pass through on I-40 or I-540 between Little Rock, Fayetteville and Oklahoma City, or use it as a gateway to the Ozarks and the wine town of Altus.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical way to see Fort Smith: sights, hotels and restaurants sit 5–15 min apart and the city is built around I-540. Fort Smith Transit runs local buses, but routes and hours are limited and not aimed at visitors. Downtown itself is walkable once you park. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin outside peak hours.

Watch out
Safety
- Tornado risk: Fort Smith sits in a high-frequency corridor, with the worst months Mar–Jun. Know where to shelter and follow local alerts.
- Summer heat and humidity in Jul–Aug; plan indoor stops in the middle of the day.
- Sights are spread out: without a car you will miss Belle Grove, Chaffee Crossing and most of the food.
- Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; stay on lit streets and drive between districts at night.
