Fort Smith sits on the Arkansas-Oklahoma line where the Arkansas and Poteau rivers meet, at the edge of the River Valley between the Ouachita and Ozark mountains. It grew as a frontier army post and court town, and its one essential stop is the Fort Smith National Historic Site, with the reconstructed gallows and the courtroom of Judge Isaac Parker. The rest of the city is spread out along Rogers Avenue and needs a car. Most travellers pass through on I-40 or I-540 between Little Rock, Fayetteville and Oklahoma City, or use it as a gateway to the Ozarks and the wine town of Altus.
