  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Fort Smith sits on the Arkansas-Oklahoma line where the Arkansas and Poteau rivers meet, at the edge of the River Valley between the Ouachita and Ozark mountains. It grew as a frontier army post and court town, and its one essential stop is the Fort Smith National Historic Site, with the reconstructed gallows and the courtroom of Judge Isaac Parker. The rest of the city is spread out along Rogers Avenue and needs a car. Most travellers pass through on I-40 or I-540 between Little Rock, Fayetteville and Oklahoma City, or use it as a gateway to the Ozarks and the wine town of Altus.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see Fort Smith: sights, hotels and restaurants sit 5–15 min apart and the city is built around I-540. Fort Smith Transit runs local buses, but routes and hours are limited and not aimed at visitors. Downtown itself is walkable once you park. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin outside peak hours.

River town below the Ozark ridges; a stop on the way to Altus rather than a destination.

US-71 south, about 20 min

Small town with little for visitors; go only for a specific event.

Alma, Arkansas

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

I-40 east, about 25 min

Known as the spinach capital; a quick roadside stop, not a day out.

Russellville, Arkansas

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

I-40 east, about 1 h 15 min

Long for a return trip; better as a stop on the way to Little Rock.

Clarksville, Arkansas

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

I-40 east, about 1 h

Ozark foothills town; combine with Altus and Ozark in one loop.

Talimena Scenic Drive (Talihina, OK to Mena, AR)

overnight

Door to door: 2 h to the start

Drive south on US-71 then US-271 into Oklahoma, about 1.5 h to the start

54 miles along the Ouachita ridge with frequent turnouts; too far for a comfortable same-day return.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Garrison Avenue

Walk to the national historic site, Miss Laura's and the bars on Garrison; the Wyndham city-center tower is here. Best for one night without a car.

Rogers Avenue east (near I-540)

Chain hotels, Central Mall and the restaurant strip; 10–15 min drive to downtown. Best with a car.

Phoenix Avenue / South 74th Street

Highway-side chains near the interstate; cheapest rooms, nothing in walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

Fort Smith is a normal mid-size US city: the real risks are severe spring weather, summer heat and driving on I-540. Lock the car, keep to lit streets downtown at night, and treat tornado watches as a plan, not background noise.
  • Tornado risk: Fort Smith sits in a high-frequency corridor, with the worst months Mar–Jun. Know where to shelter and follow local alerts.
  • Summer heat and humidity in Jul–Aug; plan indoor stops in the middle of the day.
  • Sights are spread out: without a car you will miss Belle Grove, Chaffee Crossing and most of the food.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; stay on lit streets and drive between districts at night.
