Collarenebri

Stop for 2–3 hours on the Gwydir Highway, or sleep one night if you are towing a van: Walgett and Moree are each about an hour away.

Collarenebri is a 650-person village on the Barwon River in Walgett Shire, about an hour from Walgett and an hour from Moree on the Gwydir Highway. There is a café, a pub with rooms, a free primitive campground and a heritage-listed Aboriginal cemetery. It is a break in a long drive, not a destination in itself.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes, but the cemetery is 4 km out on Gundabloui Road and the racecourse sits on the Lightning Ridge–Collarenebri road. Fuel up in Walgett or Moree: do not count on a servo here.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high distance. The real risks are heat, no fuel for an hour either way, wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, and patchy phone signal — tell someone your route.
  • Distances are real: Walgett and Moree are each about an hour away, and the next town either way is further.
  • Summer days pass 40 °C (104 °F); carry more water than you think you need and do not walk the cemetery at midday.
  • Kangaroos and emus on the highway at dawn and dusk — this is the main crash risk out here.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy outside the village; download offline maps before you leave Walgett or Moree.
  • Roads can close after heavy rain; check the Live Traffic NSW app before committing to the Gwydir Highway.

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Collarenebri. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–May, Aug–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (40 °C+ days), and the highway after heavy rain · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Field-check the campground (pitch count, water, shower) and the pub's room count and last check-in.
  2. Confirm the cemetery gate and any access rules with the Collarenebri Local Aboriginal Land Council before publishing a visit time.
  3. Verify the race day date each year — it moves — and whether the course is open on non-race days.
  4. Add a fuel-and-water fixture for the Walgett–Moree gap so the drive-through decision is exact.
