Freising

Sleep one night in Freising only if you land or leave at Munich Airport, or want the Weihenstephan brewery and cathedral hill; otherwise base in Munich.

Freising sits 40 km north of Munich and borders Munich Airport, so it works as an airport night, a half-day between flights or a quiet base for the brewery hill and cathedral. The old town is compact and walkable in two to three hours; the sights that justify a night are the Domberg cathedral complex and the Weihenstephan brewery, the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; parking is scarce, so leave the car. Local buses and the S1/regional trains are part of the Munich MVV fare network, so one ticket covers bus, S-Bahn and Munich U-Bahn within its zones.

Altstadt (Untere and Obere Hauptstraße)

Walk to the cathedral hill, restaurants and the station; best for one night with bags.

Domberg

Quiet, on the hill by the cathedral and diocesan museum; few beds, book ahead.

Weihenstephan hill

Next to the brewery, Bräustüberl and the research garden; a steep 15-min walk down to the centre.

Near Freising station

Practical for early trains and the S1 to Munich; 10 min walk to the old town.

Watch out

Safety

Freising is a low-risk small city; the real issues are the steep Domberg climb, bicycles in the old town and pickpockets around Munich Airport and the station at peak times.
  • The S1 from Munich splits before Freising: check you are in the half going to Freising, not the airport half.
  • The cathedral library hall and the city museum have been closed for renovation: check before you plan around them.
  • Weihenstephan brewery tours run on limited days and times and need booking: check the official site.
  • Domberg is a steep climb; allow 10–15 min on foot from the old town.
