Saariselkä is a compact resort strip in a fell valley, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle and 30 km from Ivalo airport. It is a do-not-see destination: aurora nights, husky and snowmobile safaris, cross-country skiing and the trails of Urho Kekkonen National Park. Most travellers stay three to four nights, walk the village on foot and use the ski bus or a car for the slopes and trailheads.

Getting around

The village strip is walkable in 10–15 minutes. The ski bus shuttles between the village and the slopes about once an hour (all-day ticket €4). Coaches to Ivalo, Laanila and Kakslauttanen stop several times a day; a few continue via Kiilopää. Taxis are bookable by app or phone, with fixed prices when you give the destination.

Watch out

Safety

Finland's far north is very safe for tourists; the real risks are cold, dark and distance. Check the forecast, carry a charged phone and never ski or hike alone off marked trails in winter.
  • Auroras are frequent in season but cloud cover often hides them: plan several nights, not one.
  • Winter temperatures can fall below −30 °C: rent or buy proper boots, mittens and a face cover.
  • Distances between the village, Laanila, Kakslauttanen and Kiilopää are too long to walk in winter gear: book the ski bus or a transfer.
  • The Kuukkeli shopping centre burned down in 2022; the grocery store and Alko are in temporary premises, so check the current location on arrival.
  • Restaurant tables in high season (Dec–Mar) fill early: book dinner the same morning.
