Akaroa
Give Akaroa one night, two at most: a harbour cruise and a walk of the historic waterfront fill a day, and it works as a Christchurch day trip.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
Akaroa sits in a flooded volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, 85 km and 80–90 minutes by road from Christchurch on the winding SH75. It was New Zealand's only French settlement, and the street names and the museum keep that history. The harbour holds Hector's dolphins, and the town itself is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes.

Watch out
Safety
- SH75 from Christchurch is winding and slow; allow 90 minutes and do not rush it in the dark.
- The road to Akaroa Head and Flea Bay is gravel, steep and exposed; 4WD is recommended and conditions can change.
- Dolphin swimming has a minimum age (8 on Ecoseaker) and limited numbers; book ahead in summer.
- Many businesses run shorter hours or close between May and September.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for CHC: bus connection in central Christchurch, drive time on SH75, taxi fallback.
- Walking clusters with anchors: Rue Lavaud and the wharf, Rue Jolie, the museum and Garden of Tane, Akaroa Head.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Akaroa Museum, The Giant's House, Akaroa Head) and eat pages with last orders.
- Cruise-ship-day fixtures so the wharf shuttle and town crowding are flagged.
