Akaroa
Give Akaroa one night, two at most: a harbour cruise and a walk of the historic waterfront fill a day, and it works as a Christchurch day trip.
Akaroa sits in a flooded volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, 85 km and 80–90 minutes by road from Christchurch on the winding SH75. It was New Zealand's only French settlement, and the street names and the museum keep that history. The harbour holds Hector's dolphins, and the town itself is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes.

Get around
The town is walkable; you do not need a car once you are in Akaroa. A car or shuttle is needed for Akaroa Head, Flea Bay and the Banks Peninsula Track trailheads. Cruise-ship days bring a free shuttle between the main wharf and the town centre.
