Monterey is a small coastal city on a cold-water bay, 2 h south of San Francisco by car. The draw is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the 19th-century adobe core of Old Monterey, and wildlife you can see from the shore. It is a two-night stop, not a week-long base, and the weather is cool and foggy even in summer.

Getting around
Downtown, Cannery Row and the wharves are walkable from each other (20–35 min along the coastal path). Monterey-Salinas Transit buses cover the peninsula and Salinas; a free summer trolley links downtown and the aquarium. A car helps for Carmel, Point Lobos and Big Sur, but parking near Cannery Row is tight and ticketed.
