Monterey, California
Monterey
Two nights is enough: one full day for the aquarium and Cannery Row, one for Old Monterey and the wharves. Add a third only for Big Sur or Carmel.
Monterey is a small coastal city on a cold-water bay, 2 h south of San Francisco by car. The draw is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the 19th-century adobe core of Old Monterey, and wildlife you can see from the shore. It is a two-night stop, not a week-long base, and the weather is cool and foggy even in summer.

Get around
Downtown, Cannery Row and the wharves are walkable from each other (20–35 min along the coastal path). Monterey-Salinas Transit buses cover the peninsula and Salinas; a free summer trolley links downtown and the aquarium. A car helps for Carmel, Point Lobos and Big Sur, but parking near Cannery Row is tight and ticketed.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cannery Row parking is enforced aggressively: a few minutes over a meter can mean a $35 ticket.
- Summer fog can sit all day; pack a jacket even in July.
- Highway 1 through Big Sur is twisty and can close after winter rockfalls — check road status before driving.
- Sea lions and seals are wild: keep the legal distance and never block a beach exit.
Monterey is a low-crime tourist town; the real risks are cold water, cliff edges and the summer fog that hides both. Car break-ins happen at trailheads and beach lots — leave nothing visible.
