Dharamsala is two towns on one hillside: Lower Dharamsala at 1,400 m, which is offices and the bus stand, and McLeod Ganj at about 1,750–2,080 m, 5 km uphill, where the Tibetan community, the Dalai Lama's temple and almost every guesthouse sit. Above McLeod, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Haini are 10–20 minutes apart on foot. Three nights covers the temple, a waterfall walk and one longer trek; the monsoon (Jul–Sep) is wet and landslide-prone, and winter nights drop below freezing.

Getting around

On foot between McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and Haini (20 min maximum). Shared taxis McLeod–Dharamkot run roughly hourly for about ₹20 (2023 rate, check); chartered auto-rickshaws about ₹250, short hops ₹50–150. Use the auto and taxi counters near the main square rather than drivers who approach you. The Dharamsala Skyway cable car links Lower Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj, about ₹450 one-way / ₹675 return (check).

Haini

10 min further north; hostels with the widest valley views and the start of the Galu waterfall trail.

Watch out

Safety

Dharamsala is calm and safe for tourists, including solo women, but the real risks are mountain ones: monsoon landslides, cold and exposure on the Triund trail, and touts on Temple Road. Trek with proper shoes, water and a warm layer, and start early.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings heavy rain, leeches on trails and landslide closures on the Kangra roads.
  • Triund is a 6 km (3.7 mi) climb to 2,875 m: carry water, food and a warm layer; weather turns cold and cloudy fast, and every year under-equipped walkers get into trouble.
  • Drivers may tell you no rickshaws run uphill to McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot. They do, and they are far cheaper than taxis.
  • Upper pools at Bhagsu waterfall have had broken glass in the water; do not swim there.
  • Temple Road and the main square have persistent touts and overpriced shops: agree any fare before you get in.
