Humahuaca sits at about 3,000 m in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, on the road between San Salvador de Jujuy and the Bolivian border. The town itself is small and walkable — whitewashed colonial centre, a cathedral, a handicrafts market and the Monumento de la Independencia. The reason to stay is the Serranía de Hornocal, the "mountain of 14 colours", 40 minutes out by shared van. One night covers the town and Hornocal; two if you want Peña Blanca or the Coctaca ruins without rushing. February carnival fills every bed.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk everywhere; no local transport needed. For Hornocal, shared vans and taxis leave from the bus station several times a day — confirm the current times and price with your hostel or the touts at the station. Buses along the Quebrada connect Humahuaca with Uquía, Tilcara, Purmamarca and San Salvador de Jujuy.

Watch out

Safety

Humahuaca is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are altitude, sun and cold nights. Carry cash, keep an eye on your bag in the carnival crowds, and don't start the Hornocal walk at the top if you feel unwell.
  • Altitude: the town is about 3,000 m and the Hornocal viewpoint about 4,350 m — acclimatise first, and skip the 20-minute walk at the top if you feel the altitude.
  • Internet is slow and unreliable; don't plan to work from here.
  • Cash: the only bank in town is on the plaza and charges a withdrawal fee; bring pesos from Jujuy or Salta.
  • Hornocal colours only show in the afternoon — a morning trip is wasted.
