Humahuaca
Base here 1–2 nights for the Quebrada: Hornocal at 14:00, the monument and market on foot, then move on to Tilcara or Purmamarca.
Humahuaca sits at about 3,000 m in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, on the road between San Salvador de Jujuy and the Bolivian border. The town itself is small and walkable — whitewashed colonial centre, a cathedral, a handicrafts market and the Monumento de la Independencia. The reason to stay is the Serranía de Hornocal, the "mountain of 14 colours", 40 minutes out by shared van. One night covers the town and Hornocal; two if you want Peña Blanca or the Coctaca ruins without rushing. February carnival fills every bed.

For Hornocal, shared vans and taxis leave from the bus station several times a day — confirm the current times and price with your hostel or the touts at the station.
