- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
Wanaka is a lakeside town of about 6,500 people on the South Island, 70 km from Queenstown over the Crown Range. It is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the base for Cardrona and Treble Cone ski fields. It is smaller and quieter than Queenstown, with a compact walkable centre on the lakefront.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: lakefront, shops and restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot. For ski fields, trailheads and Lake Hawea you need a car or a shuttle; hire cars and mountain bikes are available in town. Buses to Queenstown, the glaciers, Christchurch and Dunedin leave from the Log Cabin at 100 Ardmore Street.

Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Queenstown
goDoor to door: About 1 h 10 min by car; about 1 h 30 min via SH 6
Drive via the Crown Range Road, or bus from the Log Cabin at 100 Ardmore Street
Do it as a day out, not as a base swap: Wanaka beds are cheaper and the town is quieter.
Arrowtown
goDoor to door: About 1 h 15 min
Drive via the Crown Range Road and SH 6
Pair it with the Queenstown run rather than a separate trip.
Mount Aspiring National Park (Rob Roy Glacier track)
goDoor to door: About 1 h 15 min drive each way, plus 3–4 h walking
Drive the Wanaka–Mount Aspiring Road to the Raspberry Creek car park, then walk
The most popular day walk from town; the last stretch is unsealed and can flood.
Cardrona and Treble Cone ski fields
goDoor to door: About 35–45 min
Drive, or take a ski shuttle from town
Winter only; chains required and the Treble Cone access road is winding and partly unsealed.
Fox Glacier and Franz Josef
overnightDoor to door: About 3 h 15 min to Fox Glacier
Drive SH 6 north via Haast
Too far for a return day: sleep on the West Coast.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Town centre (Ardmore St and Brownston St)
Walk to lakefront, cafés and bars; most hostels, motels and the i-site are here.
Lakefront and Eely Point
Lake views and quieter evenings; 10–15 min walk to the shops.
Out of town (Luggate, Halliday Rd, Ballantyne Rd)
Lodges and larger houses with parking; you need a car for everything.

Watch out
Safety
- Wanaka is pronounced like "won a car", not "wa-NAH-ka".
- The Crown Range Road to Queenstown is the highest sealed main road in New Zealand: check conditions and carry chains in winter.
- Ski-field access roads are winding and unsealed in part; chains are required in winter and rental agreements may not cover them.
- Book beds months ahead for the Warbirds Over Wanaka air show and for July–August ski weeks.
- Lake and river water is cold even in summer; check conditions before swimming or boating.
