Wanaka is a lakeside town of about 6,500 people on the South Island, 70 km from Queenstown over the Crown Range. It is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the base for Cardrona and Treble Cone ski fields. It is smaller and quieter than Queenstown, with a compact walkable centre on the lakefront.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable: lakefront, shops and restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot. For ski fields, trailheads and Lake Hawea you need a car or a shuttle; hire cars and mountain bikes are available in town. Buses to Queenstown, the glaciers, Christchurch and Dunedin leave from the Log Cabin at 100 Ardmore Street.
