  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hendersonville is a lake city 30 minutes north of Nashville, on Old Hickory Lake, and the one-time home of Johnny Cash and other country names. Its draws are small and spread out: a cemetery of music graves, two historic houses, lake parks and family fun centres. Come with a car, for one or two nights, and pair it with Nashville rather than making it the trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city is spread out and sidewalks thin out past the centre. I-65 and TN-386 (Vietnam Veterans Blvd) link it to Nashville; TN-31E (Nashville Pike / Johnny Cash Parkway) runs through town. Rental agencies, rideshare and taxis operate locally, and parking at businesses is generally free.

Cookeville

A plateau town with caves nearby; better as an overnight on a longer drive.

Sewaneeovernight

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep one night on the plateau.

Sanders Ferry Road

Lake side, parks and boat ramps; quiet, car required.

Watch out

Safety

Suburban and generally low-risk; the real issues are driving (I-65 traffic, deer on rural roads at dusk) and summer heat. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads and boat ramps.
  • Distances between sights are long; walking between them is not realistic.
  • Summer heat and humidity from June to August; plan outdoor stops for the morning.
  • Lake swimming and boating: check current conditions and use marked areas.
  • Some businesses close early on Sundays; check hours before you drive out.
