Rules in force · 7
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • China ↗Most nationalities need a visa, a unilateral visa-free entry (the list and end dates change) or the transit exemption below. Confirm your route on the official sites before you buy a ticket.
  • China ↗Transit stay without a visa: up to 240 hours (10 days) for citizens of about 55 listed countries who pass through China to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket and a stay inside the permitted area (Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei count as one area). It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Changsha is the capital of Hunan and a 2,000-year-old city on the Xiang River, rebuilt after a 1938 fire that destroyed most of its old fabric. It is a high-speed rail junction 2.5 h from Guangzhou and 6.5 h from Beijing, and it is best known today for Mao Zedong's student years, the Mawangdui Han tomb collection and a street-food scene built on stinky tofu and mini lobsters. Two nights covers the core; most travellers pass through on the way to Zhangjiajie or Guangzhou.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake; doable as a long day.

Hengyang

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

High-speed train from Changsha South

Mount Heng is the draw; a return day is tight — sleep one night.

Zhangjiajie

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

High-speed train from Changsha South, or bus from Changsha West Bus Station

Too far for a return day; go for 2 nights.

Huaihua

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

High-speed train from Changsha South

Gateway to western Hunan villages; sleep there.

Jishou

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

High-speed train from Changsha South

Base for Dehang and Fenghuang; not a day trip.

Yongzhou

caution

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

High-speed train from Changsha South

Sights are spread out; a return day leaves little time.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Wuyi Square / Taiping Street

City centre, walkable to Taiping Street and Jia Yi's residence; metro lines 1 and 2. Best for a first visit.

Changsha Railway Station area

Metro lines 2 and 3; good for one night with bags and early trains. About 25–30 min by metro to the South Station.

Changsha South Railway Station

High-speed rail hub; convenient for a late arrival or an early departure, thin on food and nightlife.

Yuelu District (west bank)

Near Hunan University, Yuelu Academy and Yuelu Mountain; quieter, 20–30 min by metro to the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Changsha is a safe big city by day and night; the real risks are summer heat, heavy rain days and traffic. Watch your bag in crowds on Taiping Street and around Wuyi Square, and agree taxi fares by meter.
  • Hunan Provincial Museum is free but first-come, first-served with a timed ticket: arrive early or take a later slot and come back.
  • Most museums close on Mondays; the Bamboo Slips Museum closes Tuesdays.
  • Summer is hot and humid with heavy rain days; July and August highs reach 33–34 °C.
  • The Mawangdui site is only the excavation ditch — the artifacts are in the Provincial Museum.
  • Foreign visitors may need to register at an enquiries desk before entering some museums; carry your passport.

Fare anchors (2026 estimate)

  • Airport bus to downtown: ¥16.5 (≈ US$3), 06:00–22:00
  • Maglev airport to Changsha South: about ¥20 (≈ US$3), then metro to the centre
  • Taxi start fare: ¥8 (≈ US$2) by day, ¥10 (≈ US$2) at night

Say or show

  • 你好 — Hello (nǐ hǎo)
  • 谢谢 — Thank you (xiè xie)
  • 多少钱? — How much is it? (duō shǎo qián)
  • 这个 — This one, please (zhè ge)
  • 可以刷卡吗? — Can I pay by card? (kě yǐ shuā kǎ ma)
  • 洗手间在哪里? — Where is the toilet? (xǐ shǒu jiān zài nǎ lǐ)

Carry your passport: museums and some sights ask for identification, and the 72-hour transit visa exemption requires an onward ticket to a third country.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Changsha. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Oct–Nov · avoid Jul–Aug (hot and humid), Chinese New Year · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 7 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for CSX: maglev and last airport-bus departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Wuyi Square and Taiping Street, Tianxin Pavilion and the Bamboo Slips Museum, the Provincial Museum and Kaifu Temple, Yuelu Academy and Orange Island.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Hunan Provincial Museum, Yuelu Academy, Tianxin Pavilion, Bamboo Slips Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
