Colorado City straddles the Arizona–Utah line; the Utah half is Hildale. It is the best-known polygamist community in the United States, run for decades by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), and it has almost no tourist infrastructure. Come for the history and the canyon trailheads, not for a holiday. Most travellers pass through on the way to Zion or the Grand Canyon.

Everything in town is walkable in under 20 minutes; a car is needed for the canyon trailheads and the backway. No public transit. Fuel up in Hurricane or Fredonia before you arrive.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime, but this is a closed religious community: stay on public roads, do not photograph people without asking, and leave immediately if told to. The bigger physical risks are summer heat, flash floods in the canyons and long empty drives.
  • Virtually all land is owned by the United Effort Plan, an FLDS trust: stay on public roads and do not walk onto private property.
  • Local police include FLDS adherents; if you are asked to leave, leave.
  • Residents are often distrustful of outsiders and may not want to talk. Ask before photographing people.
  • Water Canyon and Canaan Mountain roads are dirt and flash-flood prone; check the forecast and never enter a slot canyon in rain.
  • Cell coverage is patchy outside town.
