Pilsen is the fourth-largest Czech city and the birthplace of pilsner beer, about an hour from Prague by train or bus. The old centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the brewery and the cathedral tower are the two things worth planning around. It also works as a base for West Bohemia spa towns and Cheb.
