Hilversum sits between Amsterdam and Utrecht, 30 minutes by Intercity from Schiphol, and is the base for the Gooi's forests, heath and lakes. It is the country's media town and its best single showcase of 20th-century Dutch architecture: about 75 buildings by W.M. Dudok, above all the 1931 Town Hall. Travellers use it as a green, quiet counterweight to Amsterdam, usually for one night or a day on a bike.

Getting around

Walk the centre: shops, bars and restaurants sit within 10 minutes of the station. For the woods, heath and lakes, rent an OV-fiets at any of the three stations for €3.15 per day and follow the red-and-white cycle signs; arterial roads have red-purple bike lanes. Buses reach the outskirts and villages but run thinly in the evening — walking is often faster. Driving is awkward: one-way inner ring, limited parking, free lots a 10–15 min walk out.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are bike traffic in the centre, thin evening buses, and leaving valuables in a car at the free parking areas.
  • Parking is scarce and the centre runs a one-way inner ring; miss an exit and you loop the whole ring again.
  • Free parking areas outside the ring are a 10–15 min walk in and valuables should not be left in the car.
  • Buses thin out in the evening; check the last connection back before you set out.
  • Town Hall guided tours run only on Friday and Sunday and are given in Dutch, with English on request.
  • Zonnestraal interior tours are monthly and need booking ahead; the estate trail is self-guided.
