Weesp is a small fortified town of about 18,000 people on the river Vecht, 12–16 minutes by Sprinter train from Amsterdam and part of the municipality of Amsterdam since 2022. Its moats, bastions and three windmills survive, and the compact centre is walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers use it as a half-day or one-night stop between Amsterdam and the Gooi, or as a cycling base on the Vecht.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: station to the Vecht quays is about 5 minutes. Rent a bike at the station for the polders, Muiden and Naarden. Bus 49 links the Amsterdam metro at Bijlmer and Gaasperplas, every 30 min (hourly evenings and weekends); bus 110 runs to Muiden, Naarden and Bussum. Only Sprinter trains stop at Weesp; Intercity trains pass through.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk town; the real issues are bicycles on the quays, unlit polder paths after dark and slippery cobbles in rain. Standard Netherlands advice applies: 112 for emergencies, 0900-8844 for non-urgent police.
  • Only Sprinter trains stop here: check the train type before boarding in Amsterdam.
  • The Torenfort aan de Ossenmarkt is not open to the public; view it from the bridge.
  • Some windmills and the town-hall porcelain museum have limited or seasonal opening: check before you go.
  • The Nigtevecht ferry (pont) runs short hours: Mon–Fri 12:00–13:30 and 15:30–17:30, Sat–Sun 12:00–17:30.
  • A planned A6–A9 motorway may cut through the polders south of town: expect local road works.
