  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Antioch is one of California's oldest towns, founded in 1850 on the San Joaquin River, and now a sprawled suburb at the end of the BART Yellow Line. Almost nothing is walkable from the station, so a car or a bus connection decides your day. Treat it as a cheap bed for the Outer East Bay, or a half-day stop for the Delta shoreline and the Black Diamond Mines hills.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the default: Highway 4 is the spine and jams at commute hours. BART ends at Antioch station, 1600 Slatten Ranch Rd, which is far from the sights — plan a bus, taxi or pickup. Tri-Delta Transit runs local buses, mostly slow and circuitous; County Connection 930 goes to Walnut Creek. Uber and Lyft operate; taxis must be called, not hailed.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45–60 min by car

County Connection 930 bus, or drive Highway 4 west

Shopping and a walkable downtown; the bus is slow, the car is not.

Door to door: About 25–35 min

Drive Highway 4 west, or BART one stop back

More food and beds than Antioch; useful if Antioch motels are full.

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Tri-Delta Transit bus, or drive Highway 4 east

Pittsburg Center BART is more convenient for some Antioch bus lines.

Martinez, California

caution

Door to door: About 50–70 min

Tri-Delta Transit 200x from Pittsburg, or drive Highway 4 west

Doable, but the bus is slow; a car makes it a half-day.

Livermorecaution

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive Highway 4 to I-680 south, then I-580 east

Wine country; no useful transit link.

Pleasanton

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive to Pittsburg Center BART, then BART to Dublin/Pleasanton

Transit works but eats the day; drive if you can.

Dublin, California

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 20 min

BART from Antioch to Dublin/Pleasanton, one change

Useful for the airport-side hotels and outlet shopping.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

BART Yellow Line from Antioch station, direct

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Highway 4 / Auto Center Drive

Chain motels with free parking; the only practical base without a car-share.

Downtown (2nd St and A St)

El Campanil, restaurants and the waterfront; dimly lit at night, few beds.

Somersville / Lone Tree Way

Shopping, waterpark and golf; needs a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime is ordinary suburb-safe; downtown is dimly lit at night with a visible homeless presence, so walk lit blocks or drive. The bigger risks are Highway 4 commute traffic, summer heat on trails and unguided mine tunnels.
  • Downtown is dimly lit at night and has a visible homeless presence: keep to lit blocks or drive.
  • Highway 4 is congested at morning and early-evening commute times.
  • Summer heat inland: carry water, little shade at the skatepark and trails.
  • Never enter the Black Diamond Mines tunnels except on a guided tour; gases have killed people.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for OAK and SFO: last BART departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: downtown and El Campanil, the marina and I St pier, Somersville and Lone Tree Way, the shoreline and Black Diamond trailheads.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (El Campanil, Antioch Historical Society Museum, Black Diamond Mines, Contra Loma) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Delta and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
