Antioch
Antioch, California
Skip Antioch as a base: it is a car-dependent Delta suburb 1 h from San Francisco by BART. Go only for the shoreline, Black Diamond Mines or cheap beds.
Antioch is one of California's oldest towns, founded in 1850 on the San Joaquin River, and now a sprawled suburb at the end of the BART Yellow Line. Almost nothing is walkable from the station, so a car or a bus connection decides your day. Treat it as a cheap bed for the Outer East Bay, or a half-day stop for the Delta shoreline and the Black Diamond Mines hills.

Get around
A car is the default: Highway 4 is the spine and jams at commute hours. BART ends at Antioch station, 1600 Slatten Ranch Rd, which is far from the sights — plan a bus, taxi or pickup. Tri-Delta Transit runs local buses, mostly slow and circuitous; County Connection 930 goes to Walnut Creek. Uber and Lyft operate; taxis must be called, not hailed.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Downtown is dimly lit at night and has a visible homeless presence: keep to lit blocks or drive.
- Highway 4 is congested at morning and early-evening commute times.
- Summer heat inland: carry water, little shade at the skatepark and trails.
- Never enter the Black Diamond Mines tunnels except on a guided tour; gases have killed people.
Daytime is ordinary suburb-safe; downtown is dimly lit at night with a visible homeless presence, so walk lit blocks or drive. The bigger risks are Highway 4 commute traffic, summer heat on trails and unguided mine tunnels.
