Annan is a small market town in Dumfries and Galloway, 22 minutes by train from Carlisle and about 25 minutes from Dumfries. The town itself is compact and walkable, but the main reason to stop is the Devil's Porridge museum at Eastriggs, three miles east, which tells the story of the First World War munitions complex. Most travellers pass through on the Glasgow–Carlisle line; one night is enough unless you are walking the Annandale Way or using it as a cheap base for the Solway coast.

Getting around

The town centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses and trains link Annan to Carlisle, Gretna and Dumfries. For Ruthwell, Powfoot, Hoddom or the Devil's Porridge you need a bike, car or taxi; the main local operator is Auberge (check current number).

Safety

Annan is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are dark unlit lanes after pub closing, fast traffic on the A75, and fast-moving tides on the Solway mudflats: do not walk out on the flats.
  • Annan railway station has no ticket office or machines: buy on board from the conductor.
  • Many attractions and eateries close or run reduced hours from November to March: check before travelling.
  • The Devil's Porridge museum is three miles east of town on the B721 with no direct rail link: plan a taxi or bus.
  • Rural roads around the Solway can flood after heavy rain: check local conditions.
